How to grow grapes

If you learn how to grow grapes, you will have the chance to enjoy a wine made by your own hands, or the sweet taste of the fruits.

Choosing the right variety of grapes is a very important task. The criteria of selection is the conditions on your part of the world. Vitus Vinifera and Vitus Iubrusca are two of the most preferred species. You will also have to choose the color, size and if you want to eat the grapes or make wine from it, of the cultivated variety.

In the process of learning how to grow grapes, you will need to know something about the conditions you need for growing them. A fertile and well-drained soil, with a pH of 5.5-6.5 is needed. A fertile soil is essential, as the plant needs lots of potassium. A soil low on potassium, will make the fruit sour. Also the soil should be dogged, at a depth of about one meter. This will break down all the hard lumps and will provide aeration and good drainage.

The next step in learning how to grow grapes, is about the place where you should grow them. You don’t need a lot of land to grow grapes, if you’re not a farmer. A fence, arbors or pergolas represent the perfect place for the grapes to be grown. You should look around your yard, to see where you could place some vines. The spacing between the plants should be around 1.5 meters, but this depends on the variety you choose. If you have a pergola in your backyard, vines should be placed at each corner, and a few between the corners, along the sides.

Another thing about knowing how to grow grapes, refers to the planting part. If the soil is prepared, you should dig up some holes, where you want to place your plants. The holes should be big enough to fit the soil that comes with the vines. Before transplanting you should moisturize the soil in the bag, and afterwards you should fill the hole with compost. The soil should be pressed firmly, and on top of it, compost should be added, because it helps retaining moisture, and also will protect the stem.

The last part of our “how to grow grapes” lesson is about how you should water the plants. The soil should not be oversaturated with water. Also, in the growing season, you must be very careful that the soil won’t completely dry out. Even after you picked up the fruits, you will still have to water, to ensure that you will get a good crop next year.
